TRU West Rail Case Study

ESS, working collaboratively with our Vp sister companies, Torrent Trackside and TPA, is proud to be a key supplier to the TRU West Rail Upgrade Project between York and Manchester. By providing essential safety, survey, and communication equipment, and delivering comprehensive on-site rail support services, ESS has played a vital role in the project’s smooth operation and timely completion, with minimal disruption to the work progress.

Project Overview

The TRU West project, which started in 2021, is a large-scale initiative to upgrade old railway lines with electrification and new signalling systems across the Transpennine link between Manchester and York. This project is anticipated to run for ten years and requires the use of specialised equipment and on-site support services to deliver the neccessary infrastructure upgrades to this section of the UK’s rail network.

Challenge

The TRU West project faces a significant challenge in terms of equipping and supporting the site with the necessary tools and resources to complete the work within the scheduled timeframe. The project’s complexity and scale, coupled with the inherent risks of working with rail plant, electricity, and prolonged work at heights presents significant safety and communication challenges that have needed to be addressed throughout the project’s duration.

Solution

To address the challenge of providing specialised equipment for the TRU West project, ESS has stepped up to the plate with a comprehensive range of equipment to meet the project’s communication, safety, and survey requirements.
Our team of experts have worked closely with the project stakeholders to identify the exact equipment needed to support the various tasks. To deliver effective communications, ESS has provided a wide range of equipment including two-way radios, full duplex systems, repeaters and site masts for longer-range communication. ESS was tasked with delivering a range of safety equipment including respiratory protective equipment, PPE, first aid and defibrillators. Finally site surveying has been undertaken, utilising a range of ESS’s survey equipment including robotic total stations, dual grade lasers, and precision cable locators.
ESS specailist on-site rail support services has been installed on key sites of the project to manage the equipment, deliver RPE equipment to subcontractors, and track communication equipment during work shifts. The provision of these services and equipment helped to ensure that the project ran smoothly, with minimal delays and disruptions while minimising lost equipment and loss charges.

Results

The provision of equipment and on-site support services by ESS has resulted in significant benefits for the TRU West project. The equipment provided by ESS helped to ensure that the communication, safety, and survey requirements of the project continue to be met, while ESS’s on-site rail support services has ensured the project continues to run as efficiently as possible.
