Chauvin Arnoux Earth Resistance Kit
The Chauvin Arnoux CA 6474 vectorial processing unit combined with the Chauvin Arnoux CA 6472 Earth Resistivity Tester can be used to measure the earth resistance of a pylon, even if it is part of a parallel earthing network, by selective measurement of the pylon under test. A single measurement can display readings of overall impedance of the line, earth resistance of the pylon considered, resistance of each pylon footing and quality of the protective earth cable
Overhead high-voltage lines are usually equipped with an earth cable to allow lightning to discharge to earth via the pylons. As all the pylons are connected to this conductor, all the pylons' earth resistances are in parallel. This means that it is impossible to measure pylon resistance using traditional 3 pole staked methods unless the earth cable is disconnected, which is a dangerous and time-consuming operation. Used in conjunction with the Chauvin Arnoux CA 6474 vectorial processing unit, the Chauvin Arnoux CA 6472 Earth Resistivity Tester enables the measurement of a pylon's earth resistance even if it is part of a parallel earth network, by selective measurement of the pylon in question. With 4 flexible current transducers positioned around the footings of the pylon and a frequency scan up to 5 kHz, it is possible to measure the earth impedance of the pylon precisely and selectively. The use of flexible sensors means that this concept can be adapted to any pylon geometry. A single measurement is sufficient to acquire all the essential quantities: overall earth resistance of the line, resistance of the pylon under consideration, resistance of each pylon footing and resistance of the earth cable between pylons. Flexible current sensors connected to the 4 pylon footings measure the total current in the earthing system. The coils on each footing must have the same number of turns with the same winding direction. The number of coil turns, the amplification and the input channel can be selected directly on the CA 6474.
ESS Code: HERS.10
- The major new feature of the Chauvin Arnoux combined CA6472 and CA6474 is the wider bandwidth available from 41 Hz to 5 kHz.
- The greater bandwidth is necessary to characterize the behaviour of an earthing system in the event of a lightning strike.
- With 4 flexible current sensors positioned around the pylon's footings and frequency scanning up to 5,078 Hz, precise, selective measurement of the pylon's earth impedance is possible.
- Furthermore, the use of flexible sensors means that this concept can be adapted to deal with any pylon geometry.
