Overview

Identify poorly compacted grounds and ineffective rolling of materials with the Clegg Impact Soil Tester type CIST/882. Also known as the Clegg Impact hammer, it facilitates the measurement of shear strength (soil) and consolidation levels during trench re-instatement. Completed through assessing effective stiffness and density of material particles, producing rate of strain into one reading of impact value.

The Clegg Impact Soil Tester also known as the Clegg Hammer or Clegg Impact Hammer, consists of a 4.5kg compaction hammer operating within a vertical guide tube. The unit measures the stiffness of a material within a selected region of impact, determined by the deceleration rate of the hammer. The hammer falls from a fixed height through the tube, striking the selected test surface area underneath. A precision accelerometer mounted on the hammer generates an electrical charge which is fed by a cable to a hand held digital readout unit. The fast microcontroller in the readout scans and filters the signal and registers the deceleration in units of Impact Value (IV) up to 100 IV. The IV is an indication of soil strength and shows good correlation with results from CBR tests.

How do you use Clegg Impact Soil Tester?

Standing whilst supporting the tube with the side of the leg and placing one or both feet on the base flange. Take out the locking pin holding the hammer within the tube so it may be removed, then unclip the metre unit. Check that the display reads "zero IV" by pressing the button on the readout.

What does the Clegg Hammer measure?

A portable tool called a Clegg Hammer, often referred to as a Clegg Impact Tester or Clegg Impact Hammer, is used to assess the shock absorption and bearing capability of a surface. It works out the bearing capacity when designing building foundations, sports fields, roads, and aggregates.

What is a Clegg reading?

The three left-hand digits on the Clegg readout show the Impact Value (IV). The higher the compacted strength and stiffness of the material, the higher will be the reading of the Impact Value. The readout displays up to a maximum range of 101 IV.
